Being There
A practical workshop exploring how to use teacher/actor-in-role with young people.
Drama is an act of self-creation. Its subject is justice. How can we use role to create dramatic events that enable young people to test their and create their own values in order to gain new knowledge about themselves and the world?
This requires imagination in action, working in role is not simply a matter of employing dramatic conventions but of being there, in the lived through moment, it is the transition from ‘acting’ to ‘being’, or ‘enacting’, which allows us to engage with what is most fundamental to our humanity. Bond’s concept of the site, the social on which the personal is situated, is critical to the process of developing dramas in which we can surprise ourselves and experience ‘felt understanding’, challenging an ideologically bound world outlook that results from the values imposed upon us by society.
